My mister, John, is retired and started working recently at Lincoln's tomb as a guide and interpreter. Abe still draws a crowd because the people come in busloads. It's high season and I believe his first day encountered 41 buses.
John has an amazing ability to remember facts and trivia and having worked for an airline is very good with chatting up just about anyone he meets. He LOVES working there and I'm delighted he's out of the house doing something.
Earlier this week there was a bus of school children from Lafayette Louisiana. Who takes a busload of kids on an 800 mile field trip? They gave him an onion bag filled with Louisiana items like beads, tabasco, Tony's seasoning, a go-cup, etc. I had hoped he would pull some Community coffee out of that bag but no. I kid, that was very thoughtful of the students.
Illinois has its share of financial woes and there are lots of promised dollars that go unpaid by the State to schools, parks, etc. Lincoln's tomb is a state run facility and the ceiling has seen its better days.
Yesterday a young boy walked up to him and said he could see that the ceiling needed to be fixed. He wanted to help and handed John a dollar saying it was all he had at the moment but that he hoped it could help.
There was another incident when John walked into the burial chamber and saw an older gentleman standing alone in salute.
I understand why he loves it.
